UNC Track And Field Opens 2000 Indoor Season At Virginia Tech Invitational

Chapel Hill, N.C. - UNC's men's and women's track and field teams kicked off their 2000 indoor season in Blacksburg, Va. at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday. DeAnne Davis led the Tar Heels in their opening day of competition taking second in the women's triple jump with an NCAA qualifying leap of 43-9 Ľ, second best in school history and a new personal best. Kentucky transfer Ola Sesay and freshman Shannon Burns finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
Davis also finished first in the preliminaries of the 60m hurdles, with a provisional NCAA qualifying time of 8.34. The Tar Heels took the top three spots in the prelims of that event with Sesay and fellow Kentucky transfer Lutisha Shittu taking second and third, respectively, each finishing with a time of 8.65.
Stefani Dixon set a new school record in the indoor pole vault with a mark of 11-5 ľ, taking third place in the event and freshman Jill Pedretti established a new school record in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 54-5 ˝, placing fourth overall in the event. The women's distance medley also entered the school record books, with the third best time in school history of 11:57.17.
On the men's side, senior Kevin Crittendon finished fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 49-7. The men also had a strong day of preliminaries with Terrance Wilson finishing fourth in the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.07.
