Lake Buena Vista, Florida--The North Carolina baseball team closed out the ACC/Disney Baseball Blast Sunday night with a 9-0 win over No. 5 Miami. The win was Carolina's third straight at the highly competitive season-opening tournament at Disney's Wide World of Sports athletic complex. Carolina defeated No. 23 Central Florida on Friday evening and No. 14 Rice on Saturday before moving to 3-0 with Sunday's win over the defending national champion Hurricanes.
Senior lefty Chris Elmore pitched seven scoreless innings of four-hit ball to pick up the win, while Miami's Tom Farmer took the loss. Elmore also struck out five Hurricane batters and was named to the All-Tournament team. Derrick DePriest came in for UNC in the top of the 8th inning and provided two innings of scoreless relief. A native of Homestead, Fla., DePriest grew up just 25 minutes from Coral Gables and the UM campus.
The shutout was only Miami's second since 1975, a span of 25 years.
Joining Elmore as all ACC/Disney Baseball Blast members were sophomore first baseman/designated hitter Ryan Blake, freshman center fielder Adam Greenberg and junior catcher Dan Moylan. Blake was 3-for-4 against the Canes, including a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, while Greenberg tallied six hits over the three-game tournament and finished his first weekend with the Tar Heels batting 2-for-4 against Miami with two stolen bases. Moylan punched out five base hits in three games and tied for the team lead with four RBI at Disney.
"It's January, and we just have to keep that in mind," said head coach Mike Fox, who last year saw the Heels open the season with a school-record 16-0 win streak in his first year on the job. "It's a little unexpected to come out and do this well. Our young guys did well. We just have to build on this, but I'm proud of our guys this weekend."
The Tar Heels return to Chapel Hill Monday morning (weather permitting) and will be back in action Wed., Feb. 9 against Elon at Boshamer Stadium.
