North Carolina forward Chris Carrieri was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week for the second consecutive week after leading the Tar Heels to a 2-0 record last week, the conference announced on Monday evening. It is the third ACC Player-of-the-Week honor for Carrieri this season, more than any other player in the conference.
Carrieri, a junior from Stafford, Virginia, scored five goals and had three assists for a total of 14 points as UNC defeated Dartmouth, 3-1, and Rider, 11-0, at last weekend's adidas/Spartan Classic hosted by UNC Greensboro. He had two goals against Dartmouth and tallied three goals and three assists against Rider.
Carrieri leads the Tar Heels in every offensive category this season: goals (17), assists (nine), points (43), game-winning goals (five) and shots (63). His 17 goals are a personal single-season high, besting the 13 he scored as a freshman in 1998.
He is just one point away from tying the school record for points in a season -- Derek Missimo scored 44 points in 1989. Missimo also holds the school record for goals in a season, 44, also set in 1989. Carrieri's 43 career goals and 101 career points both rank third in Carolina history.
Carolina returns to action on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. against Charlotte at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill.
