WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Tracy Chao made 13 saves for Wake Forest Friday night at the Demon Deacon women's soccer team defeated fifth-ranked North Carolina 1-0 before 3,000 fans at Spry Soccer Stadium. Stacy Roeck scored on a penalty kick at the 58:04 mark for the only goal of the game.
The win improved Wake Forest to 9-7-1 overall and 3-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. North Carolina fell to 12-3 overall and 3-3 in the ACC. Carolina had lost only one ACC game in its history prior to this season but has lost three road games this season, falling 2-1 to Clemson on September 13, 3-2 in overtime to Florida State on October 17 and 1-0 to Wake Forest on October 27. Friday's loss was also the first time that Carolina has been shutout in a game since losing to Santa Clara 1-0 on September 24, 1999 at the Duke adidas Classic in Durham, N.C.
UNC outshot the Demon Deacons in the game 28-5 and had 8 corner kicks to two for the Deacons. Fourteen of Carolina's 28 shots were on goal with Chao making 13 saves and the team also being rewarded a defensive save. Kristin DePlatchett played the first half for UNC and made one save. Jenni ranam was the goalkeeper in the second half and she allowed the one goal on Roeck's penalty kick.
The loss marks the first time in 18 that Carolina has lost two games in a row. The last time that occurred was in 1982 when the University of Missouri at St. Louis defeated UNC 2-1 on October 16, 1982 and Cortland State downed the Tar Heels 2-1 on October 17, 1982. Both of those matches were played in the University of Central Florida Invitational in Orlando, Fla.
The three losses in a season are the most for Carolina since the 1980 team finished with a 21-5 record.
Carolina will close out its regular season at home on Sunday when the Tar Heels host the Maryland Terrapins at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field. Maryland is 8-9 overall and 1-5 in the ACC heading into the game on Sunday.
