CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina, the top seed in the 2000 NCAA Men's College Cup, was staring first round elimination squarely in the face Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field but a pair of goals of reserve Matt Laycock in the game's final 26 minutes of regulation and an overtime goal by reserve Ryan Kneipper in the 95th minute gave the Tar Heels an amazing 3-2 victory over William & Mary.
The Tar Heels trailed 2-0 after a pair of second-half goals by the Tribe before the comeback began. Laycock's first goal came on a set piece off a pass by UNC captain Danny Jackson. Laycock tied the game with his second header just minutes later off assists by Matt Crawford and Chris Carrieri.
Carrieri, the ACC Player of the Year, then assisted on the game winner in overtime as his cross from the right side found the head of Kneipper who beat the William & Mary goalkeeper to the near post.
The Tar Heels, now 20-2 on the season, move on to host Rhode Island at Fetzer Field next Sunday at 1 p.m. in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
