Field Hockey Falls 3-1 in NCAA Title Game

NORFOLK, VIRGINIA -- The top-seeded and top-ranked Old Dominion Lady Monarchs topped North Carolina, 3-1, in the NCAA Field Hockey Championship Sunday afternoon at Foreman Field on the campus of Old Dominion University. The Lady Monarchs claimed their ninth overall NCAA crown and finished the season 25-1. North Carolina ended its season with a 20-4 record.
The Lady Monarchs took a 1-0 lead early in the game on a penalty corner when senior midfielder Marina DiGiacomo connected with 24:57 remaining in the half. The goal was assisted by Adrienne Yoder and Marjolijn van der Sommen.
Old Dominion added another goal at the 33:49 mark of the second half when Julie Miracle put back a rebound for the goal would stand to be the gamewinner. North Carolina cut into the lead on a Kristen McCann tip-in off an Abby Martin shot.
The Lady Monarchs added a third goal when Laura Steadman connected at the 6:31 mark.
Old Dominion outshot UNC 20-12, and Tar Heel goalkeeper Amy Tran made a season-high 15 saves.
Senior Kristen McCann and juniors Carrie Lingo and Abby Martin all earned spots on the NCAA Championships All-Tournament Team.
