Chapel Hill, N.C. -- The No. 20 North Carolina Tar Heel baseball team swept Penn State 21-10 and 3-2 in a Sunday afternoon doubleheader at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels and Nittany Lions combined for 31 runs, 27 hits and 21 walks in game one, while game two was a much different story. The two teams were scoreless until Penn State broke the 0-0 tie with a two-run 10th inning. Carolina answered with three runs in the bottom of the 10th to move to 6-0 on the 2000 season and win its 40th consecutive home game versus a non-conference foe.
In the game two pitchers' duel, UNC starter Chris Elmore pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out eight while giving up just two hits. Penn State starter Peter Yodis gave up just two hits and one walk while striking out 11 Tar Heels in 6.1 innings. Penn State's pitchers struck out 16 UNC batters overall, while the Tar Heel hurlers stuck out 13 Nittany Lion batters. Derrick DePriest (1-0) was credited with the win, while Shawn Fagan (0-1) took the loss.
Carolina threatened in the bottom of the eighth inning, but Fagan got Tyrell Godwin to fly out to left field with the bases loaded to end the UNC rally. PSU responded with two runs in the top of the 10th before the Heels rallied for the win with a three-run 10th. Sean Farrell reached base on a one-out single to right and Russ Adams followed with a pinch-hit double to left field. Farrell and Adams both scored after PSU shortstop John Richmond booted a Dan Moylan hit and the game was tied. Clay Hooper singled and PSU loaded the bases by intentionally walking Godwin. Ryan Earey was then hit by a Fagan pitch, forcing Moylan home for the 3-2 Carolina victory.
In the first game on the cold and misty afternoon, Carolina exploded for eight runs in the first inning and then followed with nine more over the next three to pull away from the Nittany Lions early. Earey led the offensive attack with a career high seven RBI on three hits, including two home runs. Earey smashed a grand slam, the first of his UNC career, in the fourth inning and then added a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning. Freshman Chad Prosser had a stellar game at the plate with a career-high three hits in four at bats. Godwin notched a career high with four runs scored.
Eric Henderson (1-0) went five innings, giving up just two runs on four hits to earn the win. The junior left-hander also struck out eight before being relieved by Matt Tanner in the sixth inning. B.J. Finnerty and Aaron Sheffield each logged an inning of relief to close out the game for Carolina. Sheffield gave up four runs to PSU, but struck out three Lion batters in the top of the ninth.
Carolina travels to UCLA next weekend to face the third-ranked Bruins in a three-game series. The Heels play Friday at 5 p.m. PST, and Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. PST.
