Ola Sesay Sets ACC Indoor Long Jump Record At Opening Day Of ACC Championships

Blacksburg, Va. - Tar Heel junior Ola Sesay won the women's ACC long jump title, setting a new ACC record with an NCAA automatic qualifying jump of 21-2 3/4 on the opening day of the 2000 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The old record of 21-2 was held by Trinette Johnson of Flordia State and was set in 1993. DeAnne Davis took second and All-ACC honors in the event with an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of her own of 20-9 3/4.
The UNC Track and Field team began the first day of the ACC Indoor Championships in a strong fashion by producing two ACC Champions in the first two events of the day. Sophomore Ian Douglas began the day by winning the men's shot put with a throw of 58-3, followed by teammate Sal Gigante, who took second and All-ACC honors with a toss of 55-5 1/2.
Joy Ganes then opened the women's competition by winning her third consecutive ACC indoor high jump title with an NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 6-0. Also with an NCAA provisional qualification, Trish Nervo earned All-ACC honors by finishing second in the 5000m in 16:43.37. In the shot put, Carolina freshman Ibiene Bilaye-Benibo placed second and earned All-ACC honors with a throw of 48-1 1/4 while Jill Pedretti took fourth with a toss of 46-9 1/2. Also, senior Stefani Dixon finished fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 11-4 1/4 and UNC's distance medley relay team of Julie Smith, Edi Ntuen, Beth George and Kim Timberlake finished fourth in 11:51.24. After the completion of six events, UNC's women currently stand in first place with 69 points, leading Florida State by 23 points.
In preliminary action, senior Julie Smith won her heat and took second over all in the mile with a time of 5:02.67. Lutisha Shittu and DeAnne Davis finished with the first and third fastest times in the 60m hurdles in 8.46 and 8.56, respectively. Shittu also qualified for the finals of the 60m dash in a time of 7.63. Janelle Billingslea and Edi Ntuen finished fifth and seventh in the 400m with times of 55.20 and 55.33. In the 800m, freshman Bobbie Jo Munson took the last qualifying spot in 2:12.79, barely edging out teammate Beth George (2:12.80) for the spot. And in the last preliminary of the day, Sesay and Billingslea qualified in the 200m in fifth and sixth in times of 24.76 and 24.80, respectively. Finals for all of these events will take place on Saturday.
Rounding out the men's side, Marcus O'Neal took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 24-4 1/2 and UNC's distance medley relay team came in seventh in a time of 10:13.12 to give the Tar Heels an opening day lead in the Championships with 31 points, leading Clemson by six points.
And in preliminaries, junior Jacobe Foster had the third best time in the 400m, finishing in 47.75 and sophomore Marcus O'Neal had the sixth best time in the 60m dash of 6.88. In the 800m, both Jeff Ellis and Zach Victor qualified finishing in fourth (1:51.84) and fifth (1:52.14), respectively. And finally, in the 200m, freshman Joseph Handy and O'Neal qualified in fifth (21.56) and seventh (21.61), respectively. Finals for all men's events will be held on Saturday.
