CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina Gymnastics team recorded a fourth-best ever score of 194.200 to defeat William & Mary's team score of 189.425 in front of an appreciative home crowd at Carmichael Auditorium on the UNC campus Friday night. The meet marks the second straight score over 194 for the Tar Heels as their mark of 194.575 in last week's home victory against James Madison was the third best team score in school history.
Heading the Carolina surge Friday night was junior Brooke Wilson. Her 39.400 score for the all-around competition was just off her personal best and school record score of 39.425 which she set earlier this season against Rhode Island. In amassing her all-around total, Wilson recorded her personal best score on bars at 9.900 which also tied her for the school mark with Jennifer DeLuca and Angie Denkins.
Alongside her first place finish on bars, Wilson tied for first on vault with teammate Monica Middleton with scores of 9.750, placed first on balance beam with a 9.850 score and first on floor with a 9.900. Wilson became only the third gymnast in NCAA history to complete a front handspring, front flip with a full twist.
Middleton recorded her personal best score for the all-around competition with a 38.825. That mark moves her into third place on the all-time Carolina scores list.
For William & Mary, Jessica Dancu and Nikki Dattoli performed well as Dancu placed third on the vault (9.675) and Dattoli earned third place in the all-around competition with a 37.575 score.
In lieu of injured freshman Fritzie Cathcart, the Tar Heels were only able to compete five out of the possible six gymnasts on vault. Freshman Natalie Halbach and senior captain Julie Pasqualini each had successful vaults of 9.575 to tie for sixth place and help pick up slack felt by Cathcart's injury. Pasqualini also placed second place on bars while recording a personal best score of 9.875.
Also competing well for the Tar Heels was senior captain Megan Piper as she place third on bars with a 9.800 and earned a fourth place tie with fellow senior teammate Erica Roberts with scores of 9.675.
The Tar Heels will wrap up their three week homestand on Friday, March 3rd when they face Towson University and Yale University at 7:00 p.m.
