Chapel Hill, N.C. -- The second-ranked University of North Carolina baseball team remained undefeated and extended its school-record winning streak to 19 games with a 9-0 victory over the Richmond Spiders Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Eric Henderson pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout to get the win for the Tar Heels, who are off to their best start in history at 19-0. The win was also Carolina's 50th straight versus a non-ACC foe at home and was the 600th career victory for second-year head coach Mike Fox.
Henderson was spectacular in picking up his fourth win as a Tar Heel. The junior lefty struck out four and allowed just two singles in notching the first complete game by a UNC pitcher this year. Richmond starter Bake Leonards (2-2) went 6.2 innings, giving up seven UNC runs, six of them earned, on nine hits for the loss as the Spiders fell to 10-6 on the season.
The Tar Heels scattered their nine runs over six different innings en route to the quick two hour, 17 minute victory. Dan Moylan scored Carolina's first run in the second inning and he was one of eight different Tar Heels to cross home on the day. Moylan also scored on a two-out solo home run in the fifth.
In a game in which Carolina spread its offense throughout the lineup, nine different Tar Heels had hits and six different players were credited with at least one RBI. Sean Farrell and Ryan Earey each knocked in two UNC runs. Earey leads the team with 27 RBI for the season.
Also of note, freshman centerfielder Adam Greenberg extended his season-long hitting streak to 10 games with a 2-for-4 day at the plate, and Clay Hooper hit his team-leading seventh double in the two-run seventh inning.
The Tar Heels and Spiders square off again Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium. Tomorrow's contest will be Carolina's 11th of a 12-game homestand before it travels to Georgia Tech for its ACC-opening series next weekend in Atlanta.
