UNC Sweeps U.S. Track And Field Collegiate Series

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The University of North Carolina track and field team won both the men's and women's meets at the U.S. Track and Field Collegiate Series in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Saturday. The four-team meet included Akron, William and Mary and N.C. State. The women totaled 203.5 points and the men finished with 219.5 for the wins.
UNC's Sal Gigante set the school record in the hammer with a mark of 196-11, breaking Allen Bradd's record of 194-2, set in 1998. Gigante continued his outstanding day by winning the discus with a mark of 175-5, while teammate Ian Douglas placed third in the event with a throw of 157-10, but won the shot put with a mark of 57-4 3/4.
Blair Woodward won the 100m hurdles in 15.21 and the long jump with a leap of 23-0 3/4, while Jeff Ellis took the 400m hurdles in 51.53. Brent Callaway won the pole vault with a mark of 17-2 3/4 and Jacobe Foster won the 400m in 47.41. Carolina's other first-place finishes included Jacobe Foster in the 400m in a time of 47.41, Kevin Crittendon in the triple jump with a mark of 45-10 3/4 and Kestutis Celiesius in the javelin with a throw of 210-9. Finally UNC's 4x400m relay team also took home first place with a time of 3:16.01.
On the women's side, Ola Sesay led the Tar Heels by winning the long jump with a leap of 20-8 and finishing second in both the 100m (12.04) and the 200m (24.22). Also, freshman Jill Pedretti finished first in the hammer (158-8) and discus (160-6) and placed second in the shot put with a throw of 47-0 3/4.
Other women's winners included Edi Ntuen in the 400m in 54.54, Bobbie Munson in the 800m in 2:12.06, Lutisha Shittu in the 100m hurdles in13.93, Quanda Talington in the 400m hurdles in1:01.72, and Joy Ganes in the high jump with a jump of 5-8.
In the relays, UNC's women won both the 4x100m (46.33) and the 4x400m (3:49.11).
