Chapel Hill, N.C. -- The third-ranked University of North Carolina baseball team tied a school-record Sunday afternoon with its 16th consecutive victory, beating West Virginia 6-0 in front of 2,150 at Boshamer Stadium. Carolina has now equalled last year's record 16-0 start, with seven of those wins coming against ranked opponents. West Virginia falls to 1-11.
UNC starter Chris Elmore was sharp on the mound from the start in picking up his second win of the season. The senior left-hander was perfect through the first three innings and allowed no runs on just two hits through six before being relieved by Matt Tanner. West Virginia's Steve Hendren gave up four runs on four hits, including two home runs, in 2.1 innings for the loss.
Adam Greenberg's leadoff home run to right field started the scoring for the Tar Heels in the bottom of the first. Tyrell Godwin added an RBI single and Carolina was out to the quick 2-0 start after one inning.
Clay Hooper homered in the third and a second RBI single from Godwin made the score 4-0. Hooper scored three times on the afternoon and finished 3-for-5 at the plate for his third three-hit game in his past five outings. Meanwhile, Godwin was 2-for-3 at the plate and he stole two bases.
Run-scoring singles by Greenberg in the fourth and Matt McCay in the fifth gave Carolina its final 6-0 cushion. Greenberg finished the game 2-for-5, including the first-inning homer which was the first of his UNC career.
Carolina, 10-0 at home this year, has now won 47 consecutive games versus non-conference opponents in Chapel Hill, a streak that dates back to the Seton Hall series in 1998.
Carolina hosts Western Carolina for a two-game series next Tuesday and Wednesday at Boshamer Stadium. Both games are set to begin at 3 p.m. The Tar Heels are in the middle of a 12-game homestand and will play 15 of their next 18 games in Chapel Hill. Carolina's lone road trip in that stretch is its ACC-opening series at Georgia Tech March 17-19.
