UNC Charlotte Baseball Falls To North Carolina 14-10 Before Record Crowd

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNC Charlotte despite 18 hits and 10 runs fell to instate rival North Carolina 14-10 before a UNC Charlotte record crowd of 1,711.
North Carolina scored the game's first run in the first inning as Dan Moylan doubled to right centerfield with one out for the game's first hit. He would later score the game first run on Ryan Mathews' single to leftfield.
North Carolina increased their lead to 3-0 with two runs in the second inning. Clay Hooper connected on a two-run double down the leftfield line to score those two runs.
The Niners cut the deficit to 3-2 with two runs in the second inning. Bradley Smith tripled to centerfield for their first hit. He would later score on a Kirby Southerland single to centerfield. Brad Lamm connected on a run-scoring single down the leftfield line for the other run of the inning.
UNC Charlotte took the lead with five runs on seven hits in the third inning. Southerland had the big hit of the inning with a bases loaded two-run single to centerfield.
North Carolina cut the Niners's lead to 7-5 in the fourth inning. The two North Carolina runs in the inning were the result of two UNC Charlotte errors.
North Carolina took the lead for good with five runs in the fifth inning on three hits. North Carolina loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter. They tied the game on Tyrell Godwin's two-run single to left centerfield. North Carolina took the lead for good when Mathews doubled down the leftfield line scoring Hooper.
UNC Charlotte would score a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning to cut the lead to 12-10. The fifth inning run came on a line drive home run over the leftfield wall by Brad Lamm.
However, North Carolina scored two runs on two hits in the ninth inning to make the final score 14-10.
North Carolina reliever B.J. Finnerty improved to 4-0 on the season after allowing one run over two and third inning. Ryan Earey recorded his second save of the season after pitching the final four innings of the game.
UNC Charlotte reliever Matt Johnson recorded his first loss of the season.
