Chapel Hill, N.C. -- No. 12 North Carolina bounced back from a slow start to drop Maryland 8-2 Friday evening in Atlantic Coast Conference baseball action at Boshamer Stadium. Dan Moylan drove in four runs and Ryan Snare pitched Carolina's second complete game of the year to propel the Tar Heels to the win. UNC stands 31-9 overall, 5-8 in the conference, while Maryland is 13-23, 0-10 in the ACC.
In going the distance for his seventh win of the year, more victories than in either his freshman or sophomore seasons in Chapel Hill, Snare (7-1) allowed just one earned run on seven hits while striking out eight. Jared Stuart (1-1) surrendered three runs in the seventh for the loss. Maryland starter Joe Hart held the Tar Heels to just one run on four hits over six complete innings.
Maryland runs in the first and third innings gave the Terps an early 2-0 lead, before Carolina got on the board in the fifth. Ryan Earey led off the inning and was hit by a pitch for the 22nd time this year. Dan Moylan's ground out to second base later in the inning sent Earey home and cut the Maryland advantage to 2-1.
Carolina got to reliever Jared Stuart in the bottom of the seventh. Earey led off the inning with a stand-up double down the left field line and walks to Chad Prosser and Adam Greenberg loaded the bases with no outs. Moylan, who was 3-for-5 with two doubles, crushed a ball off the wall in left-center field for a bases-clearing double and a 4-2 UNC lead. After Stuart faced five Carolina batters without recording an out Brad Lyons took the hill and got three straight outs to end the inning.
The Heels tacked on four more runs in the eighth for the final 8-2 advantage. Prosser, who finished the game 2-for-3, had an RBI single, Greenberg's sacrifice fly scored Prosser and Clay Hooper knocked a two-run homer to left for the game's final runs.
The Tar Heels and Terrapins resume their three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m. (please note time change). Sunday's first pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m..
