CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 12 North Carolina scored five runs in the first inning and tacked on 18 more runs and 23 total hits in beating Maryland 23-8 Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium to complete a three-game sweep of the visiting Terrapins. The Tar Heels have won five straight and stand 33-9 overall, 7-8 in the conference, while Maryland falls to 13-25, 0-12 in the ACC.
Chris Elmore gave up one run on six hits while striking out three over seven complete innings to improve to 5-1 on the season. Maryland starter Jamie Hammond (3-7) took the loss after giving up nine runs on 12 hits over three innings.
Tyrell Godwin (4-for-5, four runs, four RBI), Clay Hooper (3-for-5, two runs, two RBIs), Ryan Earey (3-for-5, two runs, two RBIs) and Matt McCay (3-for-3, one run, two RBIs) all had big days at the plate for Carolina. Dan Moylan, Chad Prosser and Russ Adams each had two-hit days, and Adam Shearin had his first career home run - one of four homers on the day for the Tar Heels - to aid the balanced Carolina attack.
A two-run single by McCay and a two-run home run by Sean Farrell helped Carolina to the quick 5-0 lead through one inning. Moylan and Godwin singled home runs in the second and Hooper's two-out, two-run single in the third gave Carolina a 9-0 lead through three innings.
After Maryland got a run in the fourth, the Tar Heels added six more in the sixth for a 15-1 advantage. Hooper led off the inning with a double to right-center field, his third hit of the game. Godwin followed with his seventh homer for an 11-1 lead. Chris Maples added a two-run single in the inning and finished with three RBIs in the game.
Russ Adams came on midway through the game to play second base and his two-out single in the seventh knocked in UNC's 17th and 18th runs of the game.
Shearin's leadoff homer in the bottom of the eighth sparked another five-run inning for the Tar Heels. Farrell knocked in his third run of the afternoon with a sacrifice fly to left and Earey finished the scoring with his team-leading 10th home run, a two-run shot off the scoreboard in left-center.
The Terps got seven runs in the top of the eighth inning off the Tar Heel bullpen. Aaron Sheffield allowed six runs in 0.2 innings, while Scott Autrey surrendered a run of his own in finishing the eighth. Jay Madeira pitched a scoreless ninth inning to end the game.
The Tar Heels hit the road on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game at East Carolina. On Wednesday, Carolina welcomes UNC Charlotte to Boshamer Stadium at 7 p.m.
