DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 12 ranked Duke women's tennis team finished the regular season on Sunday with a 5-4 victory over arch-rival North Carolina in the Duke Tennis Stadium.
The Blue Devils began singles play by taking the top three spots as No. 14 ranked Megan Miller defeated No. 74 ranked Marlene Mejia 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. At the No. 2 singles slot freshman Katie Granson knocked off Jessica Zaganczyk 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 and No. 32 ranked Kathy Sell defeated Carolina Hill 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Also winning her singles match was Prim Siripipat, who defeated Courtney Zalinski (6-3, 6-4).
North Carolina won the last two singles matches as Kendrick Bunn defeated Hillary Adams (6-2, 7-6), and Erin Neibling knocked off Brooke Siebel (3-6, 6-3, 7-6).
Going into doubles action the lue Devils held a 4-2 edge over the Tarheels and needed just one victory to seal the win. They got that victory quickly as the duo of Sell/Granson cruised to an 8-0 victory over Zaganczyk/Zalinski. Duke's duo of Miller/Adams, ranked No. 50, defeated Mejia/Neibling (8-3) at the No. 1 slot. This marks the first time this season the duo has played at No. 1 doubles.
UNC talleyed its lone doubles win as its duo of Bunn/Kate Pinchbeck held off a strong comeback by Duke's Siebel/Ioana Plesu 8-6.
Both Duke and UNC will play in the ACC Championships this weekend (April 20-23) in Atlanta.
