North Carolina Drops ACC Title Match

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The top-ranked Maryland Terrapins (15-1) won their second straight ACC title when they defeated 6th-ranked North Carolina 17-6 Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field. Maryland has now won three of the four ACC titles up for grabs. The Terps also won the championship in 1997 and 1999. Junior attacker Jen Adams (Marino, Austrailia) led the Terrapins with six goals and two assists, and was named the ACC Tournament MVP.
Maryland wasted no time and came out quickly with Courtney Hobbs (West Lakes, South Australia) scoring just eight seconds into the game, marking the fastest goal this year for the Terps. Twenty-six seconds later, Christie Jenkins (Media, Pa.) put the Terps up two when fellow tri-captain Kristin Sommar (North Wales, Pa.) found her under the net for the score. Both were named to the all-tounament team. North Carolina brought it to within one goal on a score from Erin McInnes (Baltimore, Md.) at 28:33, but would come no closer for the rest of the afternoon.
The Terps went up by as much as six in the first half, before the Tar Heels made their only run of the day. Amy Havrilla (Devon, Pa.) scored three-straight to decrease the deficit to 8-4 with 8:26 remaining in the first half. Havrilla, an all-tournament team member, totaled a team-high four of Carolina's six goals on the afternoon. Maryland entered the second half up four goals, and the Terps' defense took over from there. The Terrapin defense, lead by all-ACC Tournament team members Tonia Porras (Shaker Heights, Ohio) and goalie Alex Kahoe (Villanova, Pa.), would allow only one Carolina goal the entire second half. Kahoe finished the day with 15 saves. While the Terps were able to shut the Carolina attack down, Maryland got hot, highlighted by three second-half goals from Adams and two from Hobbs to make the final a 17-6 Maryland victory. The win avenged an early season, triple-overtime loss to the Heels, the only loss the Terps have suffered in two years.
No. 1 Maryland faces No. 2 Princeton on the road in it's next match-up on April 26 at 7 p.m. The sixth-ranked Tar Heels schedule takes them to Amherst, Mass., to meet Massachusetts on April 28 at 4 p.m.
