Carolina Baseball Drops Duke, 13-7

FORT MILL, S.C. - Clay Hooper and Dan Moylan each had four hit afternoons as fifth seeded North Carolina eliminated ninth seeded Duke from the 2000 ACC aseball Championship, 13-7, at Knights Stadium on Thursday afternoon. Moylan finished 4-for-5 at the plate with two doubles, a run and four runs knocked in.
The Tar Heels scored two runs in the first as Adam Greenberg led off the game with a double and then scored on Clay Hooper's RBI single. Following a wild pitch that allowed Hooper to move to second, he scored on Sean Farrell's rip to left center.
North Carolina (44-14) scored a run in the third and two in the fourth inning, taking a 5-0 lead. Moylan singled to right field and Greenberg reached via fielder's choice to drive in both runs in the the fourth.
Duke (17-41) tried to mount a comeback in the bottom half of the fourth, scoring three times. Two doubles and a pair of singles by the first four batters of the inning. JD Alleva started the inning with a two-base hit and scored on Larry Broadway's double. Wes Goodner then singled to drive in roadway and Jeff Becker.
UNC then scored three runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and three in the eighth inning taking a 13-4 lead. Moylan drove in two of his four runs with a double in the seventh inning.
Jeff Becker hit his eighth round tripper of the season in the bottom of the ninth inning, a three-run shot, to determine the final margin. Wes Goodner entered the game for North Carolina with a runner on second and two outs and proceeded to strike out the final batter of the game on thee pitches.
Chris Elmore (9-1) earned his ninth victory of the season, scattering 14 hits over 8.2 innings, allowing seven runs - six earned - with two walks and a trio of strikeouts.
Blue Devil starter Patrick Hannaway (2-6) was charged with the loss giving up five runs on five hits and walking three in 3.1 innings of work.
The Tar Heels advance to play the loser of the Clemson-Florida State game on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
