-- Tyrell Godwin was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI and Ryan Snare fired seven strong innings to lead North Carolina to a 14-5 win over Penn State tonight in NCAA Division I Championship baseball action at Yogi Berra Stadium. The second-seeded Tar Heels advance to face No. 1 Rutgers in a winners' bracket game at 4:00 p.m., while Penn State will face Army in a 12:00 noon elimination game.
Snare improved to 10-1 with seven-plus innings of work, limiting Penn State to just three runs through the first seven innings. Snare allowed just five hits, three runs, walked four and struck out 10. Godwin, returning from a quadricep injury, struck for a two-run single, sacrifice fly and solo home run in the game before departing for a pinch-runner in the eighth.
The two teams battled through two scoreless innings before Penn State plated a single run in the top of the third to take a short-lived, 1-0 lead. North Carolina fought back with five runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a two-run double from Russ Adams and then tacked on three more in the fifth, thanks to a two-run single from Godwin, to extend the lead to 8-2.
The Nittany Lions used a wild pitch and an RBI single from Shawn Fagan to cut the lead to five, 8-3, in the fifth, but a solo home run from Godwin, his 11th of the season, and an RBI single from Chad Prosser in the sixth negated those runs and restored UNC's seven-run cushion at 10-3. The Nittany Lions added another two runs in the eighth, but four from the Tar Heels in the bottom of the inning solidified the win. UNC's Derrick DePriest pitched 1.2 perfect innings to close the game.
Adam Greenberg led the Tar Heels with three hits and three runs from the leadoff spot, while seven others collected two hits apiece. Brian Bishop led Penn State with two hits, while First Team All-American Mike Campo hit his sixth home run of the season.
