Upper Montclair, N.J. -- The Penn St. Nittany Lions upset the North Carolina Tar Heels 6-5 in Sunday's first game at Yogi Berra Stadium, setting up a 4:15 p.m. return matchup between the two teams. The winner of that game will advance to the Super Regional against either Arizona St. or Texas.
Penn St. got its winning run on an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Shawn Fagan doubled to left to lead off the inning, and Tyrell Godwin misplayed the ball, letting Fagan get to third. Relief pitcher Ryan Earey threw wildly to third on a pickoff attempt, and Fagan trotted home for the 6-5 lead.
Kevin Damiano (2-2) got the win with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Earey (4-3) suffered the loss for Carolina.
Penn St. got its 6 runs on 13 hits, while committing two errors. Carolina's five runs came on just six hits, while the Heels committed five big errors.
