CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina baseball standouts Chris Elmore and Tyrell Godwin have both been named to the 2000 GTE Academic All-America second team.
Elmore, from Virginia Beach, Va., graduated earlier this month with a degree in business administration. He completed his finest season as a Tar Heel last weekend with a 9-1 record and a 4.12 ERA, and Elmore's career winning percentage of .864 (19-3) ranks second in school history. Last month, Elmore was UNC's male recipient of the Mildred McCaskill Award, given annually to the University senior who represents excellence in athletics, academics and community service. He was also honored by the ACC for his community service, and he was the baseball team's winner of the Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete Award.
Godwin, a junior history major from Council, N.C., was Carolina's starting left fielder the past two seasons and ranked among the team leaders in virtually all offensive categories. A second-team All-ACC and third-team All-America (Collegiate Baseball) selection, Godwin was second on the 2000 Tar Heel baseball team with a .363 batting average, 11 home runs and 24 stolen bases. His 67 RBIs were tied for the team lead. An ACC Academic Honor Roll and Dean's List student, Godwin is attending UNC on the prestigious Morehead Scholarship, the highest academic grant offered at Carolina.
The Tar Heels completed their season last weekend at the NCAA Regional at Upper Montclair, N.J. Carolina set new team records in 2000 with a .323 batting average, 522 runs, 719 hits and a 21-game winning streak to start the season. Carolina's 46 wins were the second most in school history.
