UNC Golfer Marcy Newton Selected For US/Japan Matches

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina golfer Marcy Newton, a senior from High Point, N.C., has been selected to participate in the US/Japan Matches this summer. Other participants include Danielle Downey, a freshman from Auburn, Carrie Summerhays, a sophomore from Brigham Young, and Angie Yoon, a junior from Nevada-Reno. Sasha Medina, a junior from New Mexico State, was selected as the alternate. The US/Japan Matches will be played June 25-July 1 (includes practice rounds) in Murietta, Calif.
Newton captured the individual championship of the Bryan National Intercollegiate earlier this spring posting a 219 total. This was the third victory of her collegiate career as she also won the '99 Fripp Island Intercollegiate and the '97 Betsy Rawls Longhorn Classic. She has posted seven top 10 finishes and eight top 20 finishes this year. Newton was selected second-team All-America last year and was named to the first-team GolfWeek/Sagarin Mid-Atlantic/East District Team in 1999. She is a three-time member of the All-ACC (1997, 1999 and 2000) and was named ACC Rookie of the Year in '97.
Newton and the North Carolina Tar Heels, ranked 29th in the latest MasterCard Collegiate Rankings, will play in the NCAA East Regional May 11-13 at the Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio. The Scarlet Course features a par 72, 6,037-yard layout.
