CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Carlos Garcia, assistant coach for the North Carolina men's tennis program, has been named the Assistant Coach of the Year for the ITA's Region II. Garcia, who is in his first year at North Carolina, is also eligible to win the national award given by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Garcia, who coached at the University of Tennessee from 1994 to 1999, won a similar award from the ITA following the 1998-99 season. During that year, he was also a finalist for the national award. A native of Knoxville, Tenn., Garcia has also coached on the ATP Tour, working with Chris Woodruff. Garcia has coached Woodruff in the Davis Cup and the Australian Open and coached Woodruff to an ATP Tour title at the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, Rhode Island.
"We knew when we hired Carlos that he came with a tremendous amount of experience," said Head Coach Sam Paul. "He has obviously done an outstanding job for us this year and for him to win such an award two years in a row shows that he is one of the outstanding coaches in collegiate tennis today."
Garcia graduated from the University of Tennessee, where he played tennis from 1982 to 1986. He helped Tennessee win the Southeastern Conference Championship in 1986 and was an All-Academic SEC pick in 1985 and 1986.
