CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina baseball team has named its 2000 team award winners, and Chris Elmore, B.J. Finnerty, Adam Greenberg and Ryan Snare were all honored for outstanding seasons and contributions to UNC baseball.
Greenberg and Snare shared the S.H. Basnight Award, given to the team's most valuable position player and pitcher, respectively. The ACC Rookie of the Year, Greenberg put together one of the finest freshman seasons in the history of Carolina baseball, batting a team-leading .386 and leading UNC in six major offensive categories. Meanwhile, Snare had a dominant junior season on the mound for the Tar Heels, posting a 10-1 record and a 3.14 ERA. He was a second-team All-ACC selection and led Carolina with 102 strikeouts in 109 innings.
Elmore earned the Walter Rabb Award as the team's most improved player after posting a 9-1 record with a 4.12 ERA. Elmore finished his career ranked second all-time in the UNC record book with a .864 career winning percentage (19-3). Last month, he was Carolina's male recipient of the Mildred McCaskill Award, given annually to the University senior who represents excellence in athletics, academics and community service.
Finnerty received the Francis "Tripp" Bourne Award, given each year since 1970 to the most dedicated Tar Heel baseball player. A fifth-year senior in 2000, Finnerty was a clubhouse leader and an inspiration to his teammates after battling back from shoulder surgery that cost him both the 1997 and 1998 seasons. He became a valuable middle reliever in 2000 and posted a perfect 5-0 mark in 17 appearances.
