CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Carlyle & Co., a Greensboro-based jeweler with 12 of its 38 stores in North Carolina, has made a three-year commitment to sponsor an annual competition between the old rivals in a combination of varsity sports.
The Blue Devils and Tar Heels will compete annually for the Carlyle Cup in 20 intercollegiate sports, beginning with the 2000-2001 school year. Points will be awarded according to a specially devised format approved by both schools.
The winner will retain the Carlyle Cup, a sterling silver and enamel urn produced exclusively for the competition in England, during the following school year.
An official presentation of the Carlyle Cup to the "winning" athletic director will be made at halftime of the annual UNC-Duke football game, along with trophies presented by the TAGHeuer watch company to the Most Outstanding Athlete from each school in the Duke-Carolina competition.
"This creates a new dimension to the Carolina-Duke series," said UNC Athletic Director Dick Baddour, "and should give added exposure for our Olympic sports program."
"Duke vs. North Carolina is the finest rivalry in not only college athletics but is unmatched at all levels of sport," explains Duke Director of Athletics Joe Alleva. "To have a great company like Carlyle & Co. step forward and bring so much more attention to 20 teams at each school makes it even more special. I sincerely thank Russell Cohen and his vision to have Carlyle & Co. become instrumental in starting a new tradition we hope will last for years."
"We are delighted and honored to be associated in this way with two of the most prestigious universities in the world," said Carlyle & Co. CEO Russell Cohen. "Our entire organization is very excited, which I am sure will spread to our customer base as the series continues."
The Carlyle Cup, which will be returned to England for some final touches, was unveiled at a press conference Monday at UNC's Finley Golf Course. Alleva, Baddour and Cohen made the official joint announcement.
The first official event in the Carlyle Cup competition is August 26, when the Carolina and Duke field hockey teams play. Three points will be awarded to the school winning the season series in football, field hockey, volleyball, baseball and men's and women's soccer, basketball, golf, lacrosse and tennis for 42 points.
Among the sports not equally funded in scholarships by both schools, one point each will be awarded in cross country, fencing, rowing, swimming, track and wrestling for six additional points. Should the 48 total points be split at the end of the school year, there are three tiebreakers.
Applying the formula to the past three school years, Duke would have captured the Carlyle Cup once and Carolina twice - each time by one point or less.
Updated point standings, recent results and upcoming games between the two schools will included in releases from the respective sports in formation offices, carried on the schools' radio networks and websites covering both athletic programs and publicized in Carlyle & Co. stores throughout North Carolina.
