The University of North Carolina softball team will play its first exhibition game of the school year Friday, hosting UNC-Greensboro for a 4 p.m. doubleheader. The Tar Heels, 47-17 last season, return seven starters and 12 letterwinners from last year's team and have added seven freshmen to the roster.
"We're excited to have the opportunity to play this early," said Donna Papa, who is in her 16th season as the Tar Heels' coach. "We've only had a few practices with the whole team together, so we'll use this game as a starting point. I'm looking forward to seeing where we are, what the freshmen look like and how well we adjust to different game situations."
The team's other fall contests are scheduled for Sept. 29 against Averett College and Oct. 20 against Louisburg College. UNC opens its 2001 schedule on Feb. 3 at South Carolina.
Last season's Tar Heels won more games than any Carolina team since the school switched to fastpitch play in 1984. In the process, UNC rewrote its record book, setting team single-season bests for hits, runs, RBI, doubles, home runs and total bases.
The Tar Heels play at Finley Field, located on Old Mason Farm Road, near the UNC campus. There is no charge for admission to Carolina softball games.
