Chapel Hill, N.C. - Logan Pause scored his first collegiate goal in the seventh minute of action and the University of North Carolina men's soccer team held on to shutout Campbell, 1-0, on Wednesday evening at Fetzer Field. With the victory, Carolina improves to 2-1 in the 2000 season. The Fighting Camels fall to 0-2.
Pause scored at the 6:41 mark on UNC's first shot of the match, catching Campbell goalkeeper Billy Englishby out of position and away from the net. Pause lofted a shot over Englishby's head and into the goal for the only score of the game.
The Tar Heels, who missed on a number of scoring opportunities, finished with 30 shots on goal to Campbell's four. Chris Carrieri led the UNC attack with seven shots, while reserve forward Ryan Kneipper had six. In fact, 12 of the Tar Heels' 15 field players who saw action in the contest took at least one shot on goal.
The Camels went over 60 minutes between their first and second shots on goal in the game. Peter Barany missed two golden scoring opportunities. In the 13th minute, Barany's header off a corner kick hit the crossbar. In the 53rd minute, an apparent goal by Barany was disallowed by referee John Wilson, who called a hand-ball in the net against Campbell.
Michael Ueltschey started in goal for UNC and earned his first shutout of the season despite not recording a save. Englishby was brilliant in the net for Campbell, tallying 13 saves, several of them very acrobatic, in just his second college game.
Carolina returns to action on Sunday afternoon when it travels to Clemson, S.C., to play its first Atlantic Coast Conference game of the 2000 season against the Clemson Tigers.
