CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Eleven different players scored points for the Tar Heel field hockey team on Sunday as fifth-ranked UNC defeated visiting Radford 8-0 at Francis E. Henry Stadium. UNC improved to 10-3 (2-1 ACC) on the season, while the Highlanders fell to 4-10.
Carolina scored for the first time 10 minutes into the game when freshman Charlotte Plugge fed junior Meredith Keller a pass from the right of the goal. Following Keller's goal, the Tar Heels scored twice more in just over two minutes to open up an early lead they wouldn't give up. Radford wasn't able to get off a shot in the game, while Carolina totaled 19.
Freshman Kerry Falgowski scored twice for UNC. Seniors Carrie Lingo and Abbey Woolley, redshirt freshmen Amber Chambers and Mary Havell, and freshman Kelsey Keeran, along with Keller, all scored single goals. UNC also got assists from Carey Fetting-Smith (two), Abby Martin (two), Stephanie Fuller and Keeran, in addition to Plugge.
Havell's goal was her first as a Tar Heel and Chambers' came as she made the second start of her career, with her first on Saturday in UNC's 4-1 win at Virginia. Fuller, a junior, played for the first time this season after rehabilitating a torn calf muscle.
"All the offense we had in this weekend's games was good preparation for the games we have coming up," Lingo said. "It was nice to see a wide variety of people score. It helped give everyone confidence, and we're all excited about this week."
In the next seven days, the Tar Heels will play three teams ranked in the top 13 nationally. On Wednesday, they host No. 3 Old Dominion at 1 p.m. in a rematch of last year's NCAA Championship game, won by ODU. The game was originally scheduled for Sept. 15, but was postponed after the events of Sept. 11.
On Saturday, Carolina hosts top-ranked Maryland for Senior Day and UNC's final Atlantic Coast Conference matchup of the regular season. The Tar Heels travel to Durham to play at No. 13 Duke Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will not count toward the ACC standings, but is worth 1.5 points in the schools' battle for the Carlyle Cup.
Heading into the matchups with Virginia and Radford, the Tar Heels had lost three of their last six games, including a pair of 2-0 shutouts to Wake Forest. UNC coach Karen Shelton tweaked her lineup a bit heading into the game against the Cavaliers and came away from the weekend's outings pleased with the way her team is playing. "After we lost those two games to Wake Forest, our confidence was shaken," Shelton said. "We've done some soul-searching and I think we've emerged as a better team. As the season goes on, we continue to grow."
