#500! Dorrance Honored As Tar Heels Whip Clemson

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
Anne Morrell scored a goal in the first three minutes of play and Anne Remy tallied a pair of second-half goals as #1-ranked North Carolina defeated #14 Clemson 3-0 in women's soccer action, giving Tar Heel head coach Anson Dorrance his 500th victory as the Carolina head coach. A crowd of 1,325 fans witnessed the historic victory at Fetzer Field. UNC Athletic Director Dick Baddour presented Dorrance with the game ball in an on-field ceremony following the victory.
Dorrance becomes only the third NCAA Division I soccer in history to win 500 games while coaching either exclusively men or women. He joins San Francisco's Stephen Negoesco who won 544 games coaching the Dons' men's team from 1962-2000 and Indiana's Jerry Yeagley has won 503 games as the Hoosiers' men's head coach since 1973.
Dorrance now an overall record of 500-22-11 in 23 years of coaching the Tar Heel women. He has 672 coaching victories overall as he led the Tar Heel men to a 172-65-21 record in 12 years as the head coach from 1977-88. Overall, Dorrance has led his two Tar Heel programs to a combined mark of 672-87-32 in 35 years of coaching, 23 women's seasons and the 12 men's seasons before he retired as the men's coach following the 1988 season.
The Tar Heels improved to 13-0 on the season with the win and they remain unbeaten in Atlantic Coast Conference play at 5-0. Clemson fell to 9-3 overall. The Tigers, playing their third straight ACC road game, fell to 3-3 in the conference.
Just as Carolina did in last Sunday's win over Wake Forest the Tar Heels struck in the third minute of the game. UNC goalkeeper Kristin DePlatchett served a long ball down the right side that was touched by a Clemson defender but then stolen by Carolina forward Alyssa Ramsey. Ramsey dribbled behind the defense and then centered to striker Anne Morrell who finished the chance to the right of Clemson goalkeeper Katie Carson.
Despite taking 12 shots in the first half to none for the Tigers the Tar Heels were unable to score again before intermission as Carson made four first-half saves. Carolina was unable to capitalize on nine first half corner kicks as the Clemson defense remained organized in the box and denied the Tar Heels great scoring chances.
The trend continued in the second half with UNC outshooting the Tigers 17-3 in the second half. Carson continued to sparkle as she made eight second-half saves. But eventually the Tar Heels wore the Tigers down to score twice in the last 13 minutes. At 77:17, Remy scored the first of her two goals as she fed Morrell in the right side of the box and then took a return pass from the freshman forward to strike a ball into the lower right corner from about 15 yards out. A little over seven minutes later Remy collected the ball on the right side, dribbled into the center of the field while evading at least three Clemson defenders and then beat Carson to the goalkeeper's left.
Carolina's Jenni Branam played in the goal for the first time since she broke the patella on her left knee in a 3-1 win over Duke on October 2. Branam came on at halftime and made two saves in the second half. The bad news on the injury front for the Tar Heels is that junior forward Susan Bush was ruled out for the season for a second straight year with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee. Bush tore her ACL on October 25, 2000 and missed the rest of the Tar Heels' season a year ago. It was determined Thursday that the star forward suffered a similar tear in her left ACL last Friday in Carolina's win over Florida State 4-1. No date for the surgery has been determined at this time.
Carolina will play an exhibition game this Saturday at 2 p.m. against its Alumni Team at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels' next regular season game will come against the 13th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers next Thursday at 7 p.m. at Charlottesville, Va.
