VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- No. 12 North Carolina men's soccer team scored three times in the second half and defeated No. 21 William and Mary, 4-1, on Tuesday evening at the Sportsplex in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
With the win, Carolina improved to 7-2 this season. William & Mary fell to 5-4-1. The victory is UNC's third in a row.
The match was close through the first half of play with North Carolina scoring the only goal in the period at the 38th minute. Tar Heel freshman forward Jonathan Davis (Los Angeles, Calif.) took a pass from senior defender Chris Leitch (Baltimore, Ohio) and deflected it off of a W&M defender to take a 1-0 lead 37:08 into the contest.
The Tribe evened the score at one early in the second half as Phillip Hucles passed the ball to forward Carlos Garcia, who put the ball in the back of the net from 30 yards away five minutes and two seconds into the period.
The Tar Heels bounced back quickly, however, scoring at 53:24 when freshman forward Marcus Storey (Missouri City, Texas) got past the keeper and made the score 2-1 in favor of UNC. The Tar Heels added two more unassisted goals, including scores by David Testo and Mike Gell.
Carolina returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Atlantic Coast Conference rival Maryland at 2 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
