DURHAM, N.C. - Sophomore forward Elizabeth Ball came off the bench to spark the #1 North Carolina women's soccer team past arch-rival Duke 3-1 Tuesday night before a crowd of 750 at Koskinen Stadium. The Dallas, Texas native scored Carolina's first two goals and added an assist on the third tally as the Heels held on against an inspired Duke team.
The Tar Heels remained undefeated on the season by improving to 9-0 on the season. The game against Duke was UNC's Atlantic Coast Conference opener. The Blue Devils fell to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in the ACC.
Goalkeeping was crucial on both sides as Duke's Thora Helgadottir made a career-high 12 saves and allowed three goals in 90 minutes of play. UNC's Jenni Branam made five saves, her most in a game since September 3, 2000 when she had five against Tennessee, and did not allow a goal in 81:20, while Kristin DePlatchett came on to spell the injured Branam late in the game and made two saves while allowing one goal in 8:40.
Carolina broke through to score the only goal of the first half at 27:50 as Ball finished a chance in front from about eight yards out. Junior Susan Bush served the ball from the right wing and it was flicked on by senior Anne Remy to Ball who buried the chance for her fifth goal of the season.
There would be no scoring for the next 55 minutes although both teams had plenty of chances--Carolina to break the game open and Duke to get the tying score. Finally, at 82:41, Ball scored on a play similar to the one she cashed in on in the first half. Remy served the ball from the right side, sophomore Alyssa Ramsey pushed it on and Ball again ran onto the ball and finished upper left corner.
That would be the first of three goals scored in the game in the final 7:19 as the crazy finish was worthy of a game between the two arch-rivals. At 85:36 Ball had a hand in the third UNC goal as she passed ahead to freshman Anne Morrell who had an easy putaway from about 12 yards out.
Duke then scored on a direct kick by Carly Fuller from about 40 yards out with two seconds remaining in the game. The ball went upper right corner as Fuller connected on her sixth shot of the night.
With the win, UNC earned three points in the 2001-02 Carlyle Cup competition, the all-sports trophy competition between Duke and Carolina. Duke won the initial Carlyle Cup in 2000-01 and Carolina now leads 9-0 during the new school year.
Carolina outshot the Blue Devils 18-14 as UNC beat Duke for the 12th straight time since Duke won at Carolina 3-2 in a regular season game at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill in 1994. It was the third straight regular season game between the two teams played at Koskinen Stadium that went down to the wire. UNC won 3-2 in 1997 at Koskinen and then rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the second half to beat Duke 3-2 at Koskinen in 1999.
Carolina, which was playing its sixth game in 12 days, will finally conclude its seven game road trip this Friday when the Heels meet Maryland at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field in College Park, Md. The Blue Devils will play at Clemson Friday night at 7 p.m.
