Laura Greene posted a double-double with 17 kills and 20 digs as the University of North Carolina volleyball team defeated Clemson, 3-1, (29-31, 30-25, 30-27, 30-17) Tuesday night at Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel Hill. With the win, the Tar Heels improve to 12-3, 5-0 in the ACC, while the Tigers drops to 4-8, 0-5 in conference play.
Nicole Reis and Eve Rackham also posted double-doubles for Coach Joe Sagula's squad. Reis totaled 12 kills and 12 digs for the match, while Rackham recorded 33 assists to go along with 10 kills and a .667 hitting percentage.
Four Tigers posted double-digit kills, led by Ryane Beasley with 15 and Jodi Steffes and Leslie Finn with 13. Steffes led the squad in digs with 19, while Jessi Betcher added 12. Betcher also recorded 32 assists for coach Jolene Jordan Hoover.
Clemson took game one, 31-29, led by Finn's five kills and .444 hitting percentage. The Tar Heels responded in game two, however, by turning a 10-14 defecit into a 29-22 lead. Clemson scored three late points, but a Laura Greene kill gave Carolina the game, 30-25.
Game three was close the entire way as the teams exchanged the lead from the start. Carolina was able to pull ahead, 13-8, but Clemson rebounded and tied the game, 18-18. The teams traded points and found themselves knotted at 27-27 before a Katie Wright kill and a Rackham kill following a diving save by Reis, put Carolina ahead, 29-27. On game point, a kill attempt by the Tigers was long and Carolina escaped with a 30-27 win. Beasley totaled 7 of her 15 kills for Clemson in game three.
UNC led from the start of game four, jumping out to a 10-6 lead and outscoring the Tigers 20-11 over the remainder of the game to win, 30-17. Carolina hit .469 as a team in game four, with Greene recording six kills and Wright totaling five kills.
The Tar Heels are back in action Friday night when they host Florida State at 7 p.m. in Carmichael Auditorium. The Tigers return to the court Sunday when they face NC State in Raleigh at 2 p.m.
