Tar Heels Look for Fourth Straight Win Sunday versus Terrapins
No. 12-ranked North Carolina (7-2, 1-1 Alantic Coast Conference) looks for its second conference win of the 2001 season this Sunday afternoon when it hosts Maryland at 2 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
Carolina has won seven of its last eight games against ACC teams (dating to last season, including the 2000 ACC Tournament). The Tar Heels are 1-1 in the conference thus far in 2001, opening the ACC season with a 2-0 loss at Virginia and evening their record at 1-1 with a 1-0 win over Duke last weekend.
Maryland is coming off a victory over Princeton on Wednesday night in College Park.
In This Week's National Rankings
Carolina is ranked No. 12 in the NSCAA coaches' poll and No. 11 by Soccer America. Maryland is unranked. In the Oct. 1 polls, UNC moved up two spots from last week in the NSCAA poll and one spot in the Soccer America poll.
Carolina vs. Maryland
Maryland leads the alltime series with Carolina, 34-19-2. The teams have split their last four appearances since the start of the 1998 season. The Tar Heels have won their last two in College Park, including a 2-1 overtime win in 1998 and a 5-1 win in 2000.
In the last game between the schools played in Chapel Hill, Maryland defeated Carolina 1-0 in 1999. UNC has lost three straight home games to Maryland and have not defeated the Terrapins in Chapel Hill since a 1-0 win in 1993.
Pause's Early Comeback Paying Dividends for Tar Heels
Sophomore midfielder Logan Pause (Hillsborough, N.C.) was expected to miss the entire season after tearing the miniscus in his left knee and undergoing surgery over the summer.
Pause returned to the field less than halfway through the season, seeing his first action in the Sept. 29 win over Duke. In his first game back on the field, he scored the game-winner in the 1-0 win over the Blue Devils.
Pause was named the ACC Co-Player of the Week and to Soccer America's 11-man Team of the Week on Oct. 1.
He began practicing at full speed on Sept. 26.
McGinty Named to Soccer America's Team of the Week for Sept. 10-16
Sophomore forward Sean McGinty scored both UNC goals in the win over UNC Greensboro on Sept. 16 and was named to Soccer America's 11-man Team of the Week on Sept. 18.
Tar Heel Defense Hopes to Repeat Last Year's Success
Carolina returns all four members of last year's defensive unit, which led the ACC with 0.75 goals allowed per game in 2000. Starting goalkeeper Michael Ueltschey (a senior) and starting defenders Danny Jackson (senior), Chris Leitch (senior) and David Stokes (sophomore) all played virtually every minute of every game last year.
Ueltschey led the ACC in shutouts, goals against average and save percentage in 2000 and has again been impressive this season, becoming a vocal leader in the back for UNC.
Jackson was named a second-team All-America in 2000 and looks to earn first-team honors this year as Carolina's central defender. Leitch and Stokes are both superb on-the-ball defenders who could merit all-conference and All-America consideration themselves.
Inexperienced Offensive Unit Beginning to Take Shape
Carolina lost 78 percent of its goals and 56 percent of its assists from the 2000 squad and entered this season with a great deal of inexperience up front.
The combined efforts of several new and relatively inexperienced players have been very effective of late for Carolina. The Tar Heels' top four scorers are all players who are either new to the program or were not starters last year - freshman Marcus Storey, junior transfer David Testo, sophomore Sean McGinty and junior Mike Gell.
The quartet has combined this year for 38 points on 15 goals and eight assists.
Among the ACC Leaders
The following Tar Heels were among the leaders in the latest ACC men's soccer release (as of Oct. 1):
Sean McGinty - Tied 6th in points (9), tied 2nd in goals (4), tied 7th in scoring (1.13 points per game)
Marcus Storey - Tied 6th in points (9), tied 7th in assists (3), tied 7th in scoring (1.13 points per game)
Noz Yamauchi - Tied 7th in assists (3)
Michael Ueltschey - 4th in goals against average (0.89), 7th in save percentage (.696) and tied 5th in saves (2.29 per game).
As a team, Carolina is 2nd in the ACC in scoring offense (2.50 goals per game) and 4th in scoring defense (0.89 goals allowed per game).
