STONE MOUNTAIN, GA. - Sophomore Nicholas Monroe led the Tar Heel men's tennis Friday in action at the 2001 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men's All-America Prequalifying Championships at the Lincol Tennis Center.
Monroe won bothof his matches Friday to advance to the third round of the prequalifying tournament where today he will meet Jason Ontog of Tennessee-Chattanooga.
Other Tar Heels struggled on Friday with four of them dropping matches in the first round. Junior Trystan Meniane won his first round match but was then vanquished in the second round.
Monroe defeated his first round opponent, Benjamin Kirksey of Ohio State, 7-5, 6-3. He then defeated Ticer Avery of Minnesota in the second round, 6-4, 7-5.
Meniane defeated Michael Weaver of Butler 6-3, 6-3 in the first round before losing to Alex Zharinov of Minnesota 6-3, 7-6 in the second round.
All other UNC players were playing their first ever matches as Tar Heels and they found them somewhat forgettable.
Geoff Boyd fell to Brandon Currie of Butler, 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-5). Andrew Metzler was eliminated by Tennessee Tech's Gernot Fischer, 6-0, 6-4. Daniel Pinchbeck was downed by Albano Franco of Georgia State by a 2-6, 6-0, 6-0 score. Jonathan Janda lost to Ciaran Foley of Illinois State 6-1, 6-2.
There was no doubles competition on Friday because of rain problems which pushed back the schedule most of the day. Janda and Marcio Petrone will meet Kosakowski and Placek of California-Santa Barbara in the first round today while Meniane and Pinchbeck will match up against Carvalho and le Belicard of Mississippi State in first round doubles action.
