CHAPEL HILL -- After a four-week absence from the Top 10, the University of North Carolina men's soccer team is ranked No. 10 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, released on Tuesday morning.
The Tar Heels spent the first two weeks of the 2001 season ranked among the nation's top five teams, coming in at No. 5 in the preseason poll and moving up to No. 4 in the first weekly poll on Sept. 3.
After a loss at No. 6 Saint Louis, Carolina fell to No. 10 on Sept. 10. Two weeks later, after a home loss to No. 6 Virginia, UNC fell to No. 14.
The Tar Heels moved up to No. 12 in the Oct. 1 poll after a 1-0 win over Duke.
Last season, Carolina spent the second half of the season ranked No. 1 in the nation and reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament before losing to two-time defending national champion Indiana.
The Tar Heels return to action this weekend with a pair of games in the UNC Greensboro Soccer Classic in Greensboro, N.C. On Friday at 5 p.m., Carolina will face No. 18 South Florida. On Sunday at 1 p.m., the Heels will face Georgia State. Both games will be played on the campus of UNC Greensboro.
