Tar Heels Advance To Third Round Of NCAA Women's College Cup

CHAPEL HILL, N.C..-- First half goals by sophomores Jordan Walker and Maggie Tomecka less than eight minutes apart propelled the top-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels to a 2-0 victory over Duke in the second round of the 2001 NCAA Women's College Cup Sundat afternoon at Fetzer Field. A crowd of 2,415 fans watched the game between the two arch-rivals.
North Carolina now advances to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels will play host to Rutgers next Saturday at 2 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
Carolina took the lead in Sunday's game on a goal by Walker at 26:54. Anne Felts and Alyssa Ramsey assisted on the goal with Walker gathering Ramsey's cross in the penalty area and finishing into the lower right corner. Felts gained possession in the midfield and pushed the ball into the deep right corner where Ramsey centered the ball to Walker for the put away. Less than eight minutes later at 34:21 the Tar Heels added an insurance goal as senior Anne Remy sent a ball from the right side into the penalty area for Tomecka, the tallest player on the field. Tomecka outjumped everyone and finished the play with a header into the upper left corner.
oth teams had some excellent chances to score in the final 55 minutes but both defenses took over from that point to keep the scoreboard at 2-0. UNC ended up with a 19-8 shots advantage and an 11-2 edge in corner kicks. Both starting goalkeepers played extremely well with Thora Helgadottir making six saves for Duke and Kristin DePlatchett four saves for North Carolina. It was a physical game with the teams combining for 29 fouls.
North Carolina improved to 21-0 on the season with the win and Duke finishes the season at 8-10-1.
