Meredith Krull is a senior from Raleigh and a member of the UNC rowing team. Throughout the year, she will provide TarHeelBlue.com readers with an inside look at her team and the experience of being a varsity athlete at North Carolina.
Wow! What an amazing week to be a rower for UNC! You may be reading this column a little earlier in the week than ususal because I couldn't wait until the usual Sunday night to write it.
I am writing this fresh from the first varsity and novice combined "Happy Hour" of the year, and although it was a tough workout, I couldn't be more pumped to be a member of this team. "Happy Hour" is our ususal Friday winter training workout. It's an intense hour of speed work in which teams of 3-5 rowers are trying to pull the most meters they can in an hour. I would have to say that everyone, varsity and novice, rowers and coxswains, pushed herself beyond what she thought possible.
We were on the ergs the other days of the week as well. We started out the week doing our standard test battery, and on Thursday we all did a long, endurance row. Each practice was made so much better because the novice and varsity were together. The novices had the extra motivation to pull hard because we were watching, and we knew we had to impress them too.
Next week we will practice as a group on Monday and Tuesday, and then it's off to home-sweet-home for a little too much turkey and pumpkin pie. To our Carolina Rowing parents: keep in mind that we may be a little hungrier this year, we've been training hard!
Happy Thanksgiving,
Mer
