CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina got a second-half goal from Logan Pause and Michael Ueltschey posted the shutout in goal as the No. 8-ranked Tar Heels defeated No. 6 Clemson, 1-0, on Saturday night. With the win, Carolina clinches at least a tie for third place in the Atlantic Coast Conference for the 2001 season.
Ueltschey played extremely well in the goal for Carolina, aggressively coming out of the net to intercept crosses and corner kicks throughout the night. During the 56th minute, Ueltschey made a spectacular save of an Andre Borges shot to preserve the shutout. Ueltschey now has 8.6 shutouts this season and 25.1 in his career, setting a new school record for career shutouts. The previous record of 25 was shared by Watson Jennison and Kevin Kane.
With the win, Carolina improves to 14-3 this season and finishes its 2001 ACC campaign with a 4-2 record. UNC will be either the second or third seed in the ACC Tournament in two weeks in Clemson, S.C. With the loss, Clemson falls to 12-4, 2-2 ACC. The Tigers still have two conference games remaining and will face Wake Forest and Duke next week.
The victory means Carolina has clinched back-to-back winning ACC records for the first time since 1979-80. Last year, the Tar Heels were 5-1 in the ACC and won the ACC Tournament.
After a scoreless first half, Pause scored the first goal of the game at the 48:47, stealing a back pass from Clemson defender Eric Lewis intended for Tiger keeper Doug Warren. Pause hustled after the slow pass and took it away from Warren before turning to score after the defensive breakdown.
Carolina will return to action next Friday night when it hosts South Carolina in the regular-season finale at Fetzer Field. The game with USC will be the final regular season home appearance for Tar Heel seniors Danny Jackson, Chris Leitch, Ryan Schumacher, Michael Ueltschey and Noz Yamauchi.
