Meredith Krull is a senior from Raleigh and a member of the UNC rowing team. Throughout the year, she will provide TarHeelBlue.com readers with an inside look at her team and the experience of being a varsity athlete at North Carolina.
Even after all the turkey, Carolina rowers came back strong and ready for another intense week of Winter Training.
On Monday, the varsity squad did an awesome workout. Joel instructed us to set the erg monitors to the "watts" setting, and then he gave us a goal that we were supposed to hold as long as possible. Because we usually focus on our splits per 500m, no one really knew exactly what kind of splits she was pulling with the monitor on watts. Nevertheless, the goal was to keep our average watts at the goal Joel gave us for as long as possible. This workout was so effective because many people found out that they can hold a much faster pace than they thought they could. Senior Jeanette Crets had a standout performance, as she pulled a faster split than her 6k pace for almost 9300 meters! Go Jeanette!
The rest of the week was spent erging, lifting and cross training by running hills. Friday marked the usual Happy Hour with the novice and varsity squads combined.
In addition to the workouts that Joel and the coaching staff make, a number of women are taking the "C2 Challenge." This challenge is organized by Concept II, the designer of our ergs. Each person that can row 200,000 meters between Thanksgiving and Chrsitmas wins a t-shirt and a certificate of achievement. Coach Laura Fogt got everyone excited about the challenge, and now a good portion of the team is putting in the extra meters to participate. On December 26th, you can look for the listing of participants on the Concept II Web site to see how many Carolina rowers did it.
Between the winter training workouts and the Concept II Challenge, Carolina rowers find themselves more dedicated than ever to a fast spring season. Thanks for logging on, and have a great week!
Yours in Carolina Blue,
Mer
