UNC Rowing Races Into Winter Training

Before the University of North Carolina rowing team moves inside for its winter training, the varsity and novice squads will join together on Saturday morning for what has become an annual ritual.
UNC's novice squad doesn't race during the fall, so to give the newcomers a taste of what racing is like, the varsity organizes and runs a regatta on University Lake. The novices will race two heats and two finals in four eights, while the varsity team members fill the roles of regatta director, chief referee, coaches and organizing committee members.
The first heat is set for 8 a.m., with the second at 8:30. The petite final, for third and fourth place, will be at 9 and the grand final, for first and second, will be at 9:30. An awards ceremony will follow the final race.
"Saturday's racing is a chance for the novices to get a competitive experience and the varsity to have a lot of fun," UNC coach Joel Furtek said. "We all have a fun day, which helps lead us into winter training."
Directions to University Lake
Follow Jones Ferry Road out of Carrboro. Shortly after crossing under N.C. 54, go left on Old Fayetteville Road. Take the first right, at the sign for University Lake. The lake is at the end of the road and the UNC boathouse is to the right of the parking lot.
