Meredith Krull is a senior from Raleigh and a member of the UNC rowing team. Throughout the year, she will provide TarHeelBlue.com readers with an inside look at her team and the experience of being a varsity athlete at North Carolina.
For all Carolina students this week marked the end of the Fall semester, but for Carolina rowers this week signaled the beginning of an even more intense phase of our winter training.
Remarkably, while most UNC students packed libraries and local coffee shops, every Carolina rower dedicated herself to pursuing her training aggressively, while still maintaining a steadfast committment to academic excellence.
Between the rigors of our course loads, we were seen all over campus, lifting, erging and running stadiums. Everyone knew that the committment to our winter training could not falter, even during the bedlam of final exams.
Beyond the challenge of staying fit during a stressful finals week is the challenge of continuing to grow speed while away for winter break. However, as I hear the talk of people erging in their grarges or finding a local health club to work out in, I am hopeful that we will return in January ready to reach our top speed.
One thing that should help is the "Second Annual Winter Break Workout Extravaganza." The extravaganza is a game we play to help motivate one another when we're apart. The team is divided into smaller teams of six. Every workout that someone does has a specific point value, and the team with the most points in the end wins.
I can't wait to come back in January and see the payoff of our hard work. This committment to staying fit will play such an important role in our spring speed.
Happy Holidays,
Mer
