Men's Tennis Sweeps Davidson Wildcats 7-0

Chapel Hill, NC - The 2001 season got off to a great start for the Tar Heel men's tennis team as they swept past Davidson 7-0. The Heels now post a 1-0 dual match record while the Wildcats fall to 0-1.
The Heels' doubles success started with the #1 tandem of Nicholas Monroe and Marcio Petrone. Monroe/Petrone defeated Hansen/Boykin 8-4. In similar fashion, the #2 duo of Trystan Meniane and David Cheatwood were victorious 8-4 over the Davidson team of Winebarger/Gould. The doubles sweep was completed with a win from the #3 team of Greg Archer and Chad Riley. Archer/Riley rolled past Haywood/Webb 8-1.
In singles play, the Tar Heels were paced by #1 player junior Marcio Petrone. Petrone earned a three set victory over Davidson's Whit Hansen 6-7, 6-2, 6-0. Carolina's #2 position was filled by senior David Cheatwood who got his final season with the Heels off to a great start by defeating Billy Boykin 6-1, 6-3. Sophomore Trystan Meniane continued the Tar Heel's dominance with a 6-2, 7-6 defeat of Chad Winebarger at the #3 singles position.
Freshman Nicholas Monroe made his collegiate singles debut by rolling past Chad Phillips 6-0, 6-2 in the #4 slot. "I went into the match a little nervous at first, but then got into the flow for the rest of the match," said Monroe of his first collegiate victory. Senior Chad Riley began his final Tar Heel season from the #5 position with a 6-4, 7-6 defeat of Davidson's Geoff Mullen. The Tar Heel sweep was completed as #6 player sophomore Greg Archer was victorious over Bryan Stonestreet 6-1, 6-2.
Head Coach Sam Paul was pleased with the Heels first victory in 2001. "It was a good match to get started with," said Paul. "We've still got some things to work on though. We will keep working every day."
The Heels will be back in action February 5 with a home match against the Campbell Camels. All home matches are played at the Cone-Kenfield tennis center. The Cone-Kenfield center is located on highway 54 behind the Friday Center.
