CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina baseball team improved to 4-0 on the 2001 season with an 8-0 win over William & Mary Wednesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. William & Mary falls to 4-1 with the loss.
UNC freshman lefty Daniel Moore got the start and pitched 7.0 shutout innings for the win. In his collegiate debut, Moore allowed just three hits and struck out four Tribe batters. W&M starter Whitt Farr (2-1) pitched 3.2 innings, allowing all eight Carolina runs on nine hits for the loss.
"I didn't feel like I had good velocity on my fastball, but I was able to locate my curve ball and my change-up pretty well, so that helped a lot," Moore said. "My two off-speed pitches definitely helped me out today."
The Tar Heels jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three third-inning runs. Chad Prosser knocked in the game's first run with a single to right field to score Ralph Roberts, who reached base with a leadoff single. Prosser later came home on a balk and Adam Greenberg singled and also scored in the inning.
Five more UNC runs in the fourth pushed the lead to 8-0. Roberts hit a two-run home run in the fourth and Sean Farrell drove in three runs on a bases-clearing double to left.
Roberts was 3-for-4 at the plate with 2 runs and 2 RBIs. Greenberg (2-for-4, 1 run) and Prosser (2-for-4, 1 RBI, 2 runs) also had multi-hit games for the Tar Heels, who are batting .366 as a team thus far in 2001.
The Tar Heels travel to Mobile, Ala., this weekend for the Coca-Cola Classic/South Alabama Tournament Friday-Sunday (Feb. 16-18). Carolina's weekend opponents in Alabama are South Alabama, Auburn and Minnesota.
