CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team opens its 2001 exhibition season this weekend at the South of the Border Tournament. The event, which is co-hosted by UNC and Duke, runs all day Saturday and Sunday.
All of Carolina's games will be played on the artificial turf at Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill. Duke also will host games on its West and East Turf fields. Action is scheduled to run on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. and on Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The Tar Heels went 12-6 last season, won the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title and were ranked No. 4 in the final IWLCA national poll. Carolina reached the NCAA quarterfinals before losing to No. 5 Loyola.
UNC returns four of their top five scorers from a year ago, including leading scorer and junior Kellie Thompson, senior Amy Havrilla, junior Christine McPike and sophomore Betsy Gaines, the 2000 ACC Rookie of the Year. Also back are offensive stalwarts Erin McInnes and Lindsay Stone and defensive star Porter Wilkinson, a consensus first-team All-America as a sophomore last spring.
Thompson and Wilkinson have both been named preseason All-Americas for the 2001 campaign.
"We're looking forward to this season," Carolina head coach Jenny Slingluff Levy says. "We lost a lot to graduation last year. That group isn't immediately replaceable, but we do have a good group behind them that's ready to step up. This team has played and grown up together, and if we can gain some confidence we can be a very good team."
Carolina opens the 2001 regular season on Feb. 25 against Davidson in Chapel Hill at 1 p.m.
