Carolina Track Makes History After Day One of the ACC Indoor Championships

lacksburg, Va. - The University of North Carolina track team produced solid performances in day one of the 2001 ACC Indoor Championships at Virginia Tech on Friday (Feb. 16). The men's team leads with 41 points, followed by Wake Forest with 26 points. The women's team trails Georgia Tech 42.50 to 38 points.
Joy Ganes became the first female track athlete in ACC indoor history to win the same event four consecutive years when she placed first in the high jump with a leap of 5'11.50". Stefani Dixon finished fourth in the pole vault, matching her personal best of 11'09.75".
The men swept the shot put led by defending champion Ian Douglas with a toss of 59'00.25". Sal Gigante placed second with a mark of 53'05.75" and John Ridgway took third with a throw of 50'10.75". This is the second consecutive year that the Tar Heels have swept the men's shot put. Blair Woodward captured the long jump title with a NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 25'05.10" followed by Marcus O'Neal in fifth (24'08.25").
Several Tar Heels ran well going into Saturday's finals. The top qualifiers for the women include Edi Ntuen running both the 200 meters and 400 meters. Ntuen ran a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 54.13 and a personal best of 21.13 in the 200 meters. Alice Schmidt and Shalane Flanagan both go into tomorrow's finals with the fastest times in the 800 meters and mile, respectively. Top men's qualifiers include Jeff Ellis and Steven Edwards qualified for the 800-meter finals. Ellis goes into Saturday's with the fastest time of 1:51.25. O'Neal will race in the 60 meter dash, qualifying in a time of 6.95. Jacobe Foster will represent the Tar Heels in both the 200 meters and the 400 meters.
The meet will begin Saturday morning at 10 am with the men's weight throw and conclude following the women's 4x400 meter relay at 4:30 pm.
