CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina won its sixth game in a row and improved to 10-2 overall with a 3-2 victory over Davidson (6-3) Tuesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels are now 5-0 in one-run games this season.
Scott Senatore pitched a stellar 3.1 innings of scoreless and hitless relief for the win. The freshman lefty struck out five and walked just one to improve to 2-1 on the season. Whitley Benson pitched the final 1.1 scoreless innings and allowed no hits for his second save. Davidson's Jeremiah Parvin (0-1) went the complete game for the Wildcats, allowing UNC's three runs on seven hits while striking out three in 8.0 innings for his first loss.
Davidson's Stephen Aldrich singled and scored to break up a scoreless game in the third, but the Tar Heels responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning when Chris Maples had a leadoff single and then scored on a wild pitch.
Wildcat catcher James Marino homered in the fourth for a 2-1 Davidson lead, before Carolina tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth on an RBI single by Chad Prosser. Carolina's final run came in the bottom of the seventh when Brandon Russell raced home on a failed pickoff attempt of Prosser at first.
Jason Howell, Maples and Prosser each went 2-for-3 to lead Carolina at the plate, while Maples also stole two bases.
Tar Heel starter Dennis Robinson allowed two runs on four hits while striking out three and walking four in 4.1 innings in his first start.
Carolina continues its 13-game homestand this weekend when it hosts UCLA for a three-game series at Boshamer Stadium. Game times are Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
