Tar Heels Fall 12-5 To Wake Forest In ACC Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina baseball team fell 12-5 to Wake Forest on a dreary Friday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels dropped to 15-5, 0-1 in the ACC, while Wake improves to 15-4, 3-1 in league play.
The Demon Deacons racked up 16 hits in the win, while Carolina managed 10 base hits but failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities throughout the afternoon. The Tar Heels stranded at least one base-runner in each of the first eight innings for a total of 12.
Wake Forest got one unearned run in the first inning, but UNC responded with a two-run home run by Chad Prosser, his second in the last two games. But Jamie D'Antona hit a two-run homer of his own in the third to put the Demon Deacons back on top 3-2.
The Demon Deacons added a pair of runs in the fourth with the help of four walks and a fielding error by Greenberg and then exploded for four runs on five hits off of reliever Kevin Brower in the sixth for a 9-2 lead.
Adam Greenberg's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth gave UNC its third run, while Ryan Blake had a two-run single in the eighth for UNC's final two runs. Greenberg, Sean Farrell, Jeremy Cleveland and Prosser each had two hits to lead the Tar Heels at the plate.
Wake Forest tacked on three runs over the final two innings to round out the scoring.
Cory Sullivan was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and four runs, Jamie D'Antona was 3-for-4 with four RBIs, Matt Price and Josh Hansen had two hits apiece and Jason Aquilante had three runs batted in for Deacs.
en Clayton (3-0) allowed three runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings for the win, while UNC starter Daniel Moore suffered his first loss in five starts. Moore (2-1) went 4.0 innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits while walking four.
Carolina and Wake Forest return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium. Fans attending Saturday's game will have the chance to win limited-edition green UNC hats (which will also be worn on the field by the Tar Heels) in celebration of St. Patrick's Day. The series concludes Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
