DURHAM, N.C. -- Lauren Gallagher (West Chester, Pa.) weaved in front of the North Carolina goal and found the top corner of the net with 14 seconds remaining, as the fourth-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team topped eighth-ranked North Carolina 10-9 in another epic battle between the two schools. It was the third consecutive one goal margin for the two schools, as both of last season's contests were decided by a goal.
North Carolina jumped out to an early lead when junior midfielder Lindsay Stone gathered the draw control and headed straight to the Duke goal to score at the seven second mark. North Carolina then tallied the second goal of the game before Duke went on an offensive tear. Kelly Dirks (Annapolis, Md.) opened up the scoring for Duke at 27:32 after Lauren Gallagher found her all alone on a breakaway. Dirks put in another goal two minutes later on a free position shot. Duke scored the next three to take a 6-2 lead in the waning minutes of the first half. North Carolina's Christine McPike notched her first of four goals on the day at the 3:45 mark to close out the scoring for the half.
After seven minutes of scoreless action to begin the second half, each team scored twice before North Carolina mounted a rally with Duke leading 8-4. McPike scored twice and two other Tar Heels added goals off of free position shots, as North Carolina tied the game 8-8 with 5:08 remaining.
Duke sophomore Meg Barnet (Adelaide, Australia) gave Duke a short-lived lead with 2:57 left when she curled in front of the net and beat North Carolina goalkeeper Melissa Coyne to the top corner. But less than a minute later, Stone knotted it back up at 9-9 by slotting a shot past Duke goalie Kristen Foster (Ellicott City, Md.). Foster made 13 saves on the day for the Blue Devils.
With under two minutes to go, each team battled for possession of the ball, and the teams exchanged turnovers twice. At the 41 second mark, Coyne was guilty of a crease violation, and Duke took control of the ball in the North Carolina end. After holding for a potential last shot, Gallagher found her way through several North Carolina defenders and fired a shot from point-blank range into the upper corner, giving Duke the victory and Gallagher her fourth point on the day (2 goals, 2 assists). Gallagher now leads the team in goals (10), assists (5), and points (16).
With the win, Duke improved the university's standing in the inaugural Carlyle Cup between the two rivals. The Carlyle Cup is a year long series in all sports sponsored by Carlyle & Co., a Greensboro-based jeweler. North Carolina now leads the series 17-11.
