Chapel Hill, N.C. - Sophomore TeShawne Jackson (Summerville, S.C.) of 19th-ranked West Virginia University took first place in the all-around competition with a 39.375 score to lead the Mountaineers to a meet record 196.375 team score and the championship of the sixth annual East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) in the Dean E. Smith Center on Saturday night.
Tar Heel senior Brooke Wilson (Sumter, S.C.) won the balance beam title for the second time in her career. She also tied her own EAGL Championship record with a 9.95 score. Wilson was named Senior EAGL Gymnast of the Year and was named to All-EAGL first team on vault, bars, balance beam, floor and all-around.
Carolina's Lisa Companioni (Tampa, Fla.) placed second on balance beam with a personal best of 9.900. Companioni was named to the All-EAGL second team on balance beam and all-around.
This championship was the Mountaineers' fourth in six years of EAGL membership. Coach Linda Burdette's team also won EAGL championships in 1996, 1997 and 1998. She was honored as the EAGL Coach of the Year for the third time in her career.
Jackson clinched the team title for West Virginia when she won the vault competition with a perfect 10.0 score. It was the first 10.0 vault in EAGL history and her third perfect 10.0 vault this season.
In addition to winning vault and all-around, Jackson was 16th on bars (9.775), 26th on the balance beam (9.65) and third on floor exercise (9.95).
While setting a meet record with their 196.375 team score, the Mountaineers edged the University of Maryland (195.875) for the title. Towson University was third in the meet with a 194.600 score while New Hampshire finished fourth (194.375). Host North Carolina (193.325) took fifth place while defending champion NC State placed sixth (193.275). Rutgers took seventh place with a 191.825 score while Pittsburgh finished eighth (191.025).
The Mountaineers had to come from behind to win the title. Entering the final two rotations, West Virginia trailed Maryland by nearly a half-point. But West Virginia finished the meet in strong fashion, earning a 49.425 on floor and a 49.225 in vault.
Led by junior Gillian Cote (Fredericksburg, Va.) and senior Jill Fisher (Huntington, N.Y.), the University of Maryland finished second in the meet for the second time in the last three years.
Cote finished second in the all-around competition with a 39.35 score while Fisher was third with a 39.275. Cote also tied for first place on bars with junior Jaime Hill (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) of West Virginia. Each had a 9.925 score.
Fisher also won the floor exercise for the second year in a row, recording a perfect 10.0 on floor. It was the first perfect-ten in EAGL Championship history.
Sophomore Dinorh Boyd (Mt. Holly, N.J.) of West Virginia tied for third in the all-around with Fisher while sophomore Kristen Presutti (Toms River, N.J.) of Towson University finished fifth with a 39.25 score.
