RALEIGH, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina men's tennis team defeated NC State 4-3 on a cool, clear afternoon in Raleigh. The win was the 14th in a row for the Tar Heels over the Wolfpack and improved UNC to 3-0 in the ACC.
Continuing their stellar play in doubles, the Tar Heels captured the doubles point for the sixth consecutive match. Having split number one and three doubles, the point came down to UNC's Marcio Petrone and Greg Archer against State's Bryce McGrory and Jon Davis. After Petrone's serve was broken at 6-5, McGrory held serve to give the Wolfpack a 7-6 lead. With the match in the balance, however, Greg Archer used his serve and volley game effectively to draw the Tar Heels back even. UNC then broke Davis'serve and Petrone held serve to secure the 9-7 victory.
Senior David Cheatwood and sophomore Trystan Meniane recorded straight set singles wins to give the Tar Heels a 3-0 lead. However, State closed the gap to 3-2 with wins at number five and six singles. Freshman Nicholas Monroe broke a State's Michael Carducci at 4-4 in the second set and then held serve to clinch the match for the Tar Heels. Monroe's win was his team leading 16th of the season, improving his dual match record to 10-2.
Marcio Petrone and Eric Jackson had split sets when the match was clinched. Jackson rallied from a break down in the third set to capture a 7-6, 4-6, 7-5 victory.
"This was a good team win," Coach Sam Paul remarked. "State fought us real hard and I'm really proud of our effort." (on the clinching singles match) "That was a tough spot for anybody to come through in (4-4 in the second and the overall match score 3-2), much less a freshman, but Nick stepped up his game and clinched it for us."
The Tar Heels (7-5 overall, 3-0 in ACC) host Florida State (9-8, 4-1 in ACC) on Saturday, March 31 at 1 p.m.
